Obtaining a Job
This is a very simple and straight-forward lesson. I usually do it on days when I have a sub, and it was great for distance learning. There's no video or anything--they just open the file (I have a doc and a google version) and go through the process of finding a job. It begins with a quiz on Utahfutures (which I believe may be going away, so...) and moves on from there. Great overview to begin.

Interviewing Tips
Warning: I created this with absolute blatant disregard for copyright law, so there are a lot of pictures and videos in it. You may want to view the videos first--the Transformer one is really good, but toward the end there are curse words so I just stopped it early. This one took me 2 1/2 days in class. There is no worksheet for this--I wanted the kids to just sit and enjoy the discussion. However, I did create a Google Form as sort of an "exit slip" that they fill out at the end, just to see if they were listening. I didn't even grade it--but I didn't tell THEM that! (UPDATED 3-3-17 to include a new slide on what employers ask and what they actually MEAN...)

Job Interview Preparation
Here is one from one of my students who did an excellent job. She's given me permission to use it as an example, and you may use it in your classes as well.

I have them fill out this sheet after the above lecture. They answer commonly asked questions for a job interview.
I struggled for years about how to actually interview them--it seemed it just took too much class time. For a few years, I would have them turn in an application and a resume in the basket, randomly choose one, and then that student would be interviewed in front of the class. But it never quite satisfied be because interviews aren't really public. During Covid, I required the students to film themselves doing a job interview, where they had to answer at least three questions. They could film it either looking at the camera as if the camera was the interviewer, or have a parent or other adult interview them. They used their chrome books and turned it in on Canvas, and it worked wonderfully. They also had to dress appropriately. I treated this as a test. I loved it, and plan to continue this as homework assignment even when school is back in session normally. |

One of the skill requirements for this section is a resume. I have them create one in Word. I usually use an old PowerPoint I used for my 2013 lessons on this. I will include it below.
