Money Video
I usually start this section with the funny money cartoon. mentioned in the lessons. There have been complaints lately that it is no longer available online. Thank goodness I downloaded it! You can download it too by clicking on the link below.

Checking PowerPoint
I have re-created the PowerPoint that came with the lessons originally, you are welcome to download it. Be warned--it will work better if you have the same fonts I do. I used the fonts: Massey Condensed, Alex Brush, and Note This.

Checks & Registers
The PowerPoint above teaches how to write a check. The students then need to practice it. The original lesson plans came with an Excel sheet created by Mike Wood and Jeff Hinton. I will provide that here for download if you need it. However, I also revamped this one just because I needed it to be shorter. I just don't want to spend three precious days on one assignment! So you can also download mine as well. Mine also has a video that explains how to do it, which is great for kids who are absent.

My Kids Bank
For the section on balancing your checkbook--I will be skipping this section because I use My Kids Bank and it will teach the exact same concept but in a more hands-on way. You can create a free login at mykidsbank.org and create virtual bank accounts for your students. They can then login to their account and make deposits and withdrawals. This site allows you to print "money" that has a one-time use code on it, which the kids enter into their account to deposit money. At auctions, my kids simply withdraw what they spend. It keeps a running balance for them, and I use it all quarter so it's a great reminder of what it means to keep a register.

Quickie Stock Market Game
I also created a REALLY REALLY AWESOME stock market game that we play on a Friday since it's about a 20 minute assignment. It took A LOT of work to figure it out, and so I am not offering that on this site. You can find it here.
This one was a BIG hit, let me tell you! The kids use an clever Excel document that randomly selects 5 stocks for them every time they press the button. They choose how much they want to invest in those stocks--spending no more than $500. The stock prices are all for real companies from 2011. After they have chosen their stocks, they click on the 2012 tab and press the "2012 Stock" button, which will pull up the stock prices for the same stocks a year later. Students get to see if their stocks went up or down. Then they choose which stocks to sell by pressing the "Sell" button. They then replace the sold stocks with another random generator button. They go through this process for four years, through 2015--all the time seeing REAL stock prices for these companies. Finally on the last "today" tab, they look up the stock prices for their companies online and enter today's stock prices. Back on the 2011 tab, they will see how much they made overall. They print the score sheet and they are done! I actually give CTE KASH for this assignment, capping it at $1000. So they actually earn money for it! My kids LOVED this assignment, and when I explained to them that we do more stock market stuff in detail in my advanced Exploring Business and Marketing class, many of them were enthusiastic and wanted to take that class! |
