My Philosophy
After nine years of teaching keyboarding, my focus has changed a great deal in what my goals are. Although I know the standard is to have each student type 35 wpm, I don't follow this completely. It is, of course, my goal, but it's too flat of a goal to cover all students. If one kid starts at 8 wpm and improves to 25, why should he get a lesser grade than another student who starts at 30 and ends at 35? To me, the key is IMPROVEMENT. I grade my students based on how many WPM they improve on in one semester--if they improve by 15 wpm, they get an A on the Speed test. I also do three Technique tests and I average the two highest scores. I have created a spreadsheet in Excel that does a lot of my grading automatically. I will add it here with false names to give you an idea, and you are welcome to use it! I am also including the Typing Progress Chart, which all students save to their file and keep track of their speed improvement each Friday as we do timed writings.

These sheet was adapted from the grading chart below. It makes it easy to record the results for the Student Learning Outcomes of Speed and Accuracy. In this chart, you can customize it for class size, Improvement requirement for speed (set to 10 wpm as the default), improvement requirement for technique (1 level) and what percentages constitute which level in improvement for technique (for example, a 59% or lower is a level 1, 74% or lower is a level 2, etc). One file is my actual results from this last semester (names have been changed) and then a blank copy.
UPDATED! The file for this is updated as of 10/1/15. If you have an older version, get the new one. It's pretty much the same, except errors have been fixed and there is a "Clear" option that erases your data when you are ready to use it again.

Keyboarding Grading Chart - UPDATED March 2014
I have updated my grading chart--fixing a few bugs and errors, as well as changing the speed to Net Speed. Now you will enter the speed and errors, which will calculate the net speed. This spreadsheet will then calculate their rate of improvement from their first timing to their last. It is set to 12 wpm as the improvement level, but you can easily change that. This spreadsheet also has a place for three technique scores. Enter the scores on those sheets, and the results will automatically be added to the main page. It will then take the highest two of the three scores and average them together for a Technique Test score.
