Stock Market
Stock Market Unit
This is a brand new series of four lessons that teach the stock market. All together they take about a 7-10 days. This has been classroom tested and it's been a big hit! The Pie Game especially is pretty awesome, as students buy and sell paper pieces of pie through several stock market rises and falls. A rather ingenious Excel sheet allows the teacher to "roll" to see if each stock goes up or down and by how much. The other lessons include another simulation, a very fun PowerPoint that explains the stock market concepts and uses videos to help, and finally Lesson 4 gives students a solid structure for creating their own stock portfolio, which they follow throughout the entire semester. Finally, I added a fifth lesson that uses a self-grading Excel sheet to review what they have learned, and has two exams--one that easier and one that's harder.
Quickie Stock Market
If you have more limited time to teach the Stock Market, this assignment is a great for a one day Wham-Bam Stock Market experience. I love this thing. The macro enabled Excel sheet allows students to, at the touch of a button, select 5 random companies out of a list of 100. They see the actual stock price for that company in January of 2011. They then follow that same stock over the next few years, buying and selling, and finally checking it's current stock price. The entire lesson can be done in 30-45 minutes.

Financial Management
Basic Accounting Unit
This classroom-tested Accounting Unit is designed to cover 1 to 1 1/2 weeks, and is meant as a basic overview of accounting. In my curriculum, I am required to teach a small portion of this along with many other business sections, so I created this unit for my 8th & 9th graders. I tried to make it simple and fun! It covers:
The Accounting Equation (Assets=Liabilities+Equity) The Balance Sheet Income Statement Personal Budget The attached zip file includes a full unit: A day to day PowerPoint for the teacher, an Excel file the students open an fill out, which is also self-grading, art files for the Liabilities and Asset cards that are used in the Balance Sheet Game, a review sheet, and the test with an answer key. There is a link to the lecture video--which is great for students who are absent and need to catch up. This video has a table of contents which allows students to skip directly to the sections they need. There is also a short video that explains how to play the Balance Sheet Game. Self Grading Checks & Register |
I have just recently changed the status of this lesson from paid to FREE! Yay! This is a great 1-2 day lesson on writing checks and keeping a balance sheet. As it's self grading, students can know immediately if their answer is correct, and print a score sheet when finished, which makes easy grading for you! This is classroom tested and has been done many, many times in my classroom!
